The City of Whitehorse and the Government of Yukon will now embark on a month process to build their bid to co-host the Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse. The final decision to award the Canada Winter Games will be made by the Canada Games Council Board of Directors with a public announcement slated for November The Canada Games strengthen the fabric of Canada through the power of sport and create enduring legacies that transform communities from coast to coast to coast.

The Canada Winter Games would see the exhilarating spectacle of Canadian sport and spirit return to the Yukon 20 years after the Games were held in Whitehorse in Each Canada Games features two weeks of competition, between 16 and 19 sports, approximately 4, summer and up to 3, winter participants athletes, coaches and managers , and over 5, volunteers.

We are thrilled to once again have the opportunity to bid on these Games and we look forward to submitting a bid that will see the Yukon and Whitehorse welcome all of Canada back in ! Most importantly, this is an opportunity to join people from across Canada in celebration of sport, culture and community. Some people put in thousands of hours over a number of years planning for this event. We had an excellent staff, many of whom have gone on to jobs in the community.

The Games Centre has become a much-loved facility in Whitehorse, with its metre pool and "lazy river," indoor running track, soccer pitch, two ice rinks one Olympic-sized, one NHL-sized , fitness centre and "flexihall".

Not only were the Games the first to be held in the North, it was also the first time every provincial and territorial team went home with a medal. The weather during the first week of competition was bitterly cold, with wind chills pushing temperatures to — But the outdoor athletes pushed gamely on, and indoor events, cultural performances, and socializing took the sting of the wind away.

Cross-country skier Emily Nishikawa was 17 years old when she won bronze in the women's relay at the Games.
