At any given time, workers were planting trees and bushes around the home, installing windows or working on a super-secret project in the hay barn south of the home. It brings the appearance of a carefully choreographed ballet, but Greg Moeller, Hubbell's head of field operations, thinks of it more like an orchestra. Preston Sharp, a designer on the show, said most builders get just a week's advance notice about the build.
Many of the builders come from a sub-group of the National Association of Home Builders called the Builder 20 group, of which Hubbell is a member. When the show's producers were looking for a builder in Iowa, the group recommended them. More than Iowa companies are involved with the project. Every item put into the home has to be donated, from nails to appliances -- Cambrian Granite in Cedar Falls donated the countertops.
Regency Hotel in Marshalltown donated a block of rooms for volunteers to stay in. Moeller said the quick notice has been a challenge especially because of the secrecy of the final plans, but it's not unfamiliar territory. Regular customers often change their minds about final design plans during a build. The one major problem the builders faced was inclement weather days before the build. Rain left the area a muddy mess. Around 1, tons of rock was hauled in to shore up roads.
The team was delayed by two hours, but eventually made that up while framing the house. Beenken and her husband drove past the site Wednesday night. At that time, the house didn't have a roof or windows. While the quick pace of construction has most people in awe, they're more interested in catching a glimpse of the show's cast. Designers Page Hemmis and Preston Sharp spent time talking to people, and even participating in the cheer.
The most talked about cast member, though, is the elusive host Ty Pennington. Even a fleeting glimpse of Pennington caused cheers Friday after he drove onto the work site in an SUV. He spent less than an hour there before leaving. Some of the cheerleaders said they felt a little disappointed they didn't get to meet him while they were there.
After getting her picture with Hemmis and an autograph from Sharp, Lauren Wiemer of Jesup went on a hunt for Pennington. Lauren, 8, strained to see over the fleet of work trucks scattered across the parking lot. Whenever she thought she saw him, she'd yell back to her brother and mother standing farther back.
But it's not just the host who has been talked about. Local business owners also hoped the show would boost their public profile, but it didn't always happen.
Carolyn Moe, owner of Gift of Grace, said that while traffic has picked up on Highway T47, she hasn't seen that filter into her store. The show's limits on what brands or advertisements can be around has also meant she can't tell advertise her store around the construction zone, Moe said.
