Storm windows keep your home dry and cozy in the winter and refreshingly cool in the summer. If they are working properly that is. There comes a time in every home owner's life, however, when we have to face repairing storm windows.
A common problem facing homeowners learning how to repair storm windows is the problem of spacing. If its just that the storm window has gotten out of its most functional alignment, it is easier to recruit some help. Once you and your assistant are ready, remove the screws that hold the storm window in the frame.
One of you needs to hold the window in place while this is underway. Once the screws are removed, have your partner adjust the window until everything is flush inside the frame and moving appropriately on the tracks. When you've finished repositioning the window, replace the screws and you're on your way. If you've got storm windows with broken, scratched, or chipped glazing, you want to remove them so you can replace the glazing entirely for the best looking result.
Start by removing the screens and storm sashes from the windows. You can sometimes, but not always, purchase replacement parts; manufacturers are often regional and may be out of business. Storm windows have a number of small plastic and metal parts that are easily broken.
In addition to corner keys, you may need to replace sliding locks, sash hangers, and pull tabs. The weatherstripping often compresses or comes out; use a spline roller to replace it with new weatherstripping. For a tighter seal consider installing better-quality storms.
If the broken pane has large pieces that will not pull out easily, disassemble the frame in order to remove the glass. Unscrew the retaining screws and remove at least one piece of framing. Do not try to shatter the glass further in attempt to free the glass.
Warning : Always wear protective gloves when working with glass. Broken shards are very sharp and can puncture you. Is your home's interior too cold in winter? Too hot in summer? Mount storm windows that block wind and keep heated and cooled air inside. Order a new pane the same size and thickness as the old. It's strong, but over the years joints loosen from the constant beating that includes removal and installation.
Fortunately, due to the design of the frame, they are relatively easy to fix. Nothing works better than screws to repair old storm window frames. Screws grab and pull the frame from both sides to reinforce the joints, cracks or splits. Remove the frame from the window.
There will be either two or three screws penetrating through the face of the frame into the trim around the window. If the frames have corrugated nails on the back that are loose, drive them back into the frame with a hammer. Drive all other nails or brads back into the frame if they're loose. If you see large cracks, drill holes through them too.
Place a piece of tape on the drill bit to indicate the depth if needed. The holes at the corners should be at 90 degrees to each other.
