We're all waiting and frothing at the mouth for new 3D-capable devices. Within the next month, you can stop drooling and start buying. Aside from delivering the magic of high-def, this unit can also be upgraded to support Blu-ray 3D content. Sony says that firmware update should be available some time this summer. Like every other consumer electronics fan, Sony is getting pretty happy with the 3D stuff.
According to Pocket-lint , the PS3 will start getting 3D firmware upgrades this summer as well. Sony promises that you'll be able to enjoy media from your computer, over your network, via a firmware update later this year.
But with a USB storage device such as a flash drive, you can enjoy photos, music, and videos now. The BDP-S views only. It doesn't give you a way to play music while watching a slideshow.
Physically, it's a nicely designed machine; the buttons are easy to see and press, and they provide tactile feedback. As for updates, well, the term "3D ready" would be more accurately rendered as "not yet ready for 3D.
One strong point is the player's responsiveness. It started playing the Independence Day Blu-ray disc in a record 26 seconds. To put that in context, the next-fastest player, the LG BD , completed its start-up in 34 seconds, and most units we've tested take more than a minute. But its mixed-bag image quality and a few poorly designed features prevent it from being a winner.
At a Glance. I thought "how bad can it really be? I don't think I can handle the poor Netflix support. It's bad enough that you can't browse or search for titles, but the movie art images are so small that I can barely read them. I would really prefer to have fewer movies on screen at one time and be able to see the box art at a decent resolution.
I'd really like to know if this is going to be fixed before my return deadline. Aside from the streaming issues, I like the player so far. I have a BDP-N which is a terrific blu-ray player. However, the Netflix streaming issue is a disappointment. Nearly every forum I visited praises this player but complains about the streaming issue.
The new network patch Vers. I'm not at the "I'm taking this thing back to the store" stage yet, but Sony needs to take the concerns raised in this forum seriously and promptly address this issue. If your competitors have fixed this problem, what is Sony's issue. Come on guys I've had several Sony blu players from first generation to present. I mean come on, why does just about every streaming player out their have this feature.
Blu Ray is a Sony technology if anyone should have these features are you guys. I could not believe after all of the registrations, I was limited to only view my Netflix instant queue. I've been enjoying the Netflix interface on my PS3 for months. I hope the Netflix interface gets updated for the Blu-Ray players, but I'm not going to wait forever. You guys really suck. I'll never buy another Sony blu player. Has anyone tried loading the Firmware from a Netflix-enabled BluRay player to one that is not Netflix capable.
I have an early model BDP-S player that cannot stream Netflix - even thought the firmware was just updated in Feb Well I'm done with this fossil of a player.
A back-panel USB port and an Ethernet jack are also available for hardwiring the player to a network. Upon powering up the player for the first time, an Easy Setup wizard guides you through the basic settings screens to get you up and running fairly quickly.
More advanced adjustments can be made using the Setup page on the main menu, where you can tweak audio, make network adjustments, and perform general system settings.
A network update option automatically searches for and installs firmware updates. The audition. One power amplifiers. The Blu -ray, Avatar, looked absolutely gorgeous in its video quality; the soundtrack is a masterpiece, as well, with incredible bass and excellent, clean surround and dialog, thanks to the Integra.
It would be nice to have discrete multichannel analog outputs, but it seems the lower price players with that feature are becoming increasingly rare. The verdict. He tests products from his home studio in North Carolina. He can be reached via email at tjeverything.
