Dani, The Therapist. The director. This song is centered on the life of a girl named Dani California. Though her story is more of a tragic one, the narrator finds subtle ways of expressing admiration for this character. The song begins by revealing the circumstances surrounding her birth. Apparently, this girl was born into a poor family to a father who was a cop and a hippie mother. As a way of breaking out of her poverty-stricken life, Dani decides to venture into robbery.

Eventually, her way of life means that she would always be on the run for theft, while killing people just to survive. In the bridge, the narrator suggests that on the outside, this woman has to put on a tough gang personality, but is actually a sweet person on the inside. As a consequence of her actions, she is shot dead by a cop. Anthony Kiedis of Red Hot Chili Pepper has explained that the character, Dani California is a representation of all the girls he has met in his lifetime.
