Ok guys, I have seen this asked over and over again, I have been in the same trap myself, searching for an answer to this. I finally found my own solution and promptly kicked my own butt for not thinking of it sooner. The machine had XP running on it, once. But then something happens, the need to re-install a fresh clean installation arises.

You get a third party tool and format the hard drive to no avail, delete all partitions, nope that didn't work either! Well back to basics, you know the computer works ok, hardware wise anyway, so think about it.

It's XP, it doesn't like something, so what has changed? Here is a thought.. Then restart computer with the XP install CD and bingo! It would appear a corruption in the MBR or maybe partition table, including over writing it with say Linux lilo or grub. Seems XP doesn't like that and complains with darkness!

Do some research there, you can make and image of the boot info for linux, and save it on your XP partition edit your boot. But don't play there unless you are sure of what you are doing. Zero fill was the answer, but that is definately destructive. It does however clean up the MBR and partition tables so the drive appears brand new and un touched.

XP doesn't argue about that! I also got this annoying error after installing Linux and then trying to install XP over it. Deleting all partitions with Partition Magic did the trick for me. Blank screen problem toomax23 2-Oct Hi code-frog! I've decided to do a fresh install of Win XP. So i insert my Win Xp Pro cd into the cd-rom, i've turned off mt laptop and then i've turned it on.

My boot settings are ok, the first device that is read is the cd-rom one. So i receive a message that says that the Hardware configuration will be checked and then the screen turns black and the system stop doing everything. Besides, if i try to insert a linux cd, the system recognizes it at boot and works well.

I've tried different windows xp version home and pro but the problem still remain Any hint? Thanks a lot! Re: Blank screen problem DocLogic Nov You probably already solved by now, but I posted a info bit on here. You might try especially if you don't need to recover data obtaining the utility software released by your hard disk manufacturer and "zero-fill" your hard drive, then try the install again.

Had same problem, was snow balled by it for a long time. Turned out not to be hardware, but simply a corrupted MBR or partition table. I am guessing MBR because re partitioning over writes the partition table, and that didn't help. Windows recently automaticly downloaded one of their wonderful secutity updates which crashed my system making it so it would not boot. I went to reinstall windows xp and relised I had lost my cd key. So I quit half-way through the setup process not being able o get passed the key.

So I bought another copy. Now when I boot my computer it says system installation is continuing. After a couple seconds it says something about the CD is does not contain the correct values and causes it to restart my computer. Well in trying to find a way to restart the installation I pulled the CD out before boot. Well now it tries to restart the installation process and blue screens. All of my files are on there and are not recently backed up.

I do have and extra hard drive and extra ram added if that make a difference one way or the other. Thanks Scott. Well let me start this by saying a few things are not adding up. To begin with the system would not boot. You then went to reinstall windows and didn't have your CD key. You bought another copy of XP so now you should have 2 CD's and 1 key.

Now you've removed the disk and are back to where you started. You want some help. As this is your first post on this site and this site is not at all about systems support it's about source code I'm smelling a fish.

So I'll take this so far but there I stop. Put your original CD in. If it boots off that the CD should have the correct values you are good to go. Your new key should work if it doesn't your dead. If this is a desktop or laptop remove the drive.

Put it in as a slave in another computer and copy your files off. Yes No. Log in Social login does not work in incognito and private browsers. Please log in with your username or email to continue.
